When I was

When I was in New York
I looked around
And I felt something that I didn’t know
I looked the faces of the folks
And I saw
A wound that nobody could heal

In Manhattan there is a place
That I didn’t see
Where somebody tries to change all the world
With no speeches, with no bombs
But with the life
Of a man that they call Jesus Christ

When I was in Vermont
I looked around
And I met people who knew to be free
And they said that you and me
We are made
To live our life in the sign of the Lord

Now I am here and I don’t know
Why I think
(that) Those folks were telling us the Truth
So we can try it again
Because you know
That we can live only if we … we are free!
